Our work is inspired by the urgent need to sustain these exceptionally biodiverse ecosystems –
which play a huge role in human wealth and wellbeing – through the current climate crisis.
our mission
To restore the coral reefs of Costa Rica in a manner that not only revitalizes the ecosystem but also enhances the well-being of the communities reliant upon them.
Raising Coral is led by world renowned reef scientists. The work is grounded in a thorough approach to identify the best places and methods for restoration. But we know we can’t do this alone. We work across many scales, involving ourselves across the spectrum of local communities, Costa Rica governance, regional organization and international frameworks. Central to our success is the partnership with local communities. Raising Coral conducts education activities to foster a deeper understanding of coral reef ecosystems. We train local community members as coral gardeners, equipping them with skills and knowledge to actively participate in restoration efforts. We also engage locals and tourists with our educational snorkeling trail and are developing a model for responsible reef tourism that benefits both the reef and local communities.
