Empowering communities, preserving nature
Who we are
The BioSur Foundation is a Costa Rican non-profit NGO based in the Osa Peninsula. Our mission is to help the communities and protect the wildlife and tropical rainforest, home to almost 3% of all the biodiversity on Earth.
Land protection
Through land acquisition, we develop climate mitigation, and biodiversity protection by strategic biological corridors.
-
135 acres dedicated to conservation and ecotourism for national and foreign tourists, just 15 minutes from Puerto Jiménez. You will find 6km of trails, platforms, frog ponds, viewing points and a river with fresh water for bathing.
-
539 acres of tropical rainforest dedicated to scientific research and protection as a buffer zone for Corcovado National Park.
COMMunity Programs
BioSur researches Osa's tropical rainforests to promote biodiversity protection, bioliteracy, and sustainability.
-
Through the sustainable use of natural resources, women from the community conserve native stingless bees and create value-added products from the medicinal honey of these bees.
-
Every month, environmental education workshops are held for children and adolescents in the communities of Puerto Jiménez on the importance of pollinators, agroecology, etc.
Scientific research
We engage local communities in land protection and drive social, economic, and environmental impact .
-
This collection houses 8,000 preserved insect specimens to encourage environmental education and scientific research into the fauna of the Osa Peninsula.
-
We use camera traps to learn about the dynamics of species within the forest to determine distributions, behavior, routes, etc. Many new species have been recorded including 14 beetles, 40 butterfly species, and 1 mammal
